The history of Skjalm Hvide

The earl Skjalm Hvide, who has given name to the hotel, was founder of one of the Middle Ages' most powerful grand stocks of Denmark. He presumably died in the year 1113. Skjalm Hvide stands high in the favour of royal power, being entrusted to manage the possessions the King.

He was married to Signe Asbjørnsdatter. Among the sons of Skjalm Hvide was Asser Rig, who was the father of Bishop Absalon and Esbern Snare. The son of King Erik Ejegod, Knud Lavard, was raised by Skjalm Hvide. Skjalm Hvide was ancestor to two magnates from Jutland. Both of them were named Stig Andersen with the surname Marsk (Marsk Stig).

Skjalm Hvide became founder to the greatest danish group of magnates in the Middle Ages, which was known as 'The Noble Hvide', although the name 'Hvide' only was a personal surname. They owned large land properties including the territory around Jørlunde. The family has financed the unique and beautiful fresco decorations in the church of Jørlunde.
